Dear Travel Friends,
You've probably seen the headlines: Thousands of flights a day
could be delayed or canceled at major U.S. airports because of federal spending
cuts.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), these
airport delays are the result of air traffic controller furloughs tied to $85
billion in across-the-board cuts known as the sequester. Personnel
of both the FAA and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are
affected.
If you'll be traveling soon, we want you to be ready for any
potential delays. Here are some tips to help you have a (hopefully) stress-free
and enjoyable experience at the airport:
- Sign up to receive flight status alerts here.
- Check the status of your flight before leaving for the
airport here.
- Plan to be at the airport 2 hours prior to your
scheduled flight departure time. There may be fewer TSA employees at
security checkpoints, leading to longer than usual lines.
- Know the 3-1-1 rules.
- Be prepared for lengthy delays once you're through
security. You might want to pack a snack and bring something to keep you
occupied if you have to wait, especially if you're traveling with small
children.
- Bring along a sense of humor; I’m afraid we’re all
going to need it!
Safe travels,
Jennifer
